My Story

THE STORY OF LYNE
In My Shoes: Exploring Privilege & Perspective

It is important you understand where my perspective is rooted, and as such, I must recognize the culture I was raised in and my experiences. I am a white, straight, able-bodied, married mother of two, born in Canada to an Italian Immigrant father and a French Canadian mother. I am bilingual, speaking French and English fluently and have some knowledge of Italian. I am well-educated and have full-time employment. In this work, the path I describe is for everyone and anyone to experience, and I draw attention to the lives of as many women as possible. Please know I cannot speak for all women, nor do I presume I can.

WHERE IT ALL BEGAN
A Whirlwind of Life's Surprises

Ready?! I was born into a whirlwind of circumstances that would shape the very core of my being. My mother, merely 16 years old, welcomed me into the world, and despite the challenges of teenage parenthood, my parents were committed to each other and our family's future. My father, a dedicated worker at the local steel mill and my mother embraced her roles as both wife and mother with loyalty and love. They worked tirelessly, sacrificing and striving until they could proudly buy our first family home. Tragedy struck when my father died at the young age of 33 in a work accident. I was 14.

Our home transformed into a stronghold of feminine power. My shy and quiet mother, widowed at 30, navigated the complexities of single parenthood raising my two sisters and I while modeling independence. This experience instilled in me the strength and resilience of women, a theme that would shape my life. I also lived with women's empowerment at school. I went to the last public all-girls high school in my area. There, I watched passive, quiet girls participate in classes by sharing their ideas and thoughts, and I was always part of cool leadership opportunities. On the flip side, when Cathedral Girls High School became co-ed, I watched my introverted friends stop sharing their ideas, and overnight there were mirrors hung up in all our lockers, including mine. I quickly became aware of how women are conditioned to be quiet, beautiful people pleasers. It changed me to my core.

My journey took an unexpected turn at 18 when I sought help for an eating disorder and other struggles. Being part of a bereavement group in high school had already opened my eyes to the intricacies of the human mind, but it was the sessions with my therapist that truly saved me. I learned that seeking help is not a sign of weakness but courage and resilience.

MY TWENTIES
Post-Grad Adventures: Road Trips & Realizations

Entering my twenties with a Bachelor of Arts degree, I found myself grappling with the weight of societal expectations. The pressure to secure a job and conform to a traditional career path felt suffocating, so I backpacked Europe solo for nine weeks!

From the cobblestone streets of Paris to the sun-kissed shores of Santorini, I immersed myself in diverse cultures, languages, and experiences. Working in Greece, I honed my Italian skills with tourists and penned the beginnings of my book, "What's the Rush?" Each country I visited taught me invaluable lessons about social expectations, cultural nuances, and the universal power of sisterhood.

Returning home, I continued to avoid the "real" world and returned to school to complete a post-graduate program in Public Relations. The day after I graduated, I embarked on a cross-country girls' road trip, followed by a solo backpacking adventure through California. With each stamp in my passport, I gained a deeper understanding of the world and my place in it. The strength and independence I cultivated as a woman traveling solo were unparalleled, fueling my confidence and sense of empowerment.

Love found me unexpectedly, and as my relationship blossomed, I found the courage to pursue my career by earning my Master's Degree in Education while traveling to Australia, Fiji, Thailand and Brunei with my financé, Ross. Our adventures continued when we returned home, got married, bought our first home, a nicer car, and, of course, started our careers in teaching.

MY THIRTIES
Lost in Motherhood: Finding My Way Through the Chaos

Entering my thirties, we welcomed our sweet, healthy son and, 18 months later, our strong, healthy daughter. I loved my babies, but motherhood kicked my ass; my body wasn't mine, my time wasn't mine, my career was on hold, and being a housewife was killing me. And just like that, a decade was gone.

IN MY FOURTIES
Lost & Found: My Journey to Self-Discovery

On my fortieth birthday, right on schedule, the universe jolted me out of the social trance. I found myself grappling with the challenges of career stagnation and personal dissatisfaction. I was stuck.

My distressing Is this it? Inner chatter and chronic burnout led me on a quest to fill the void. I refer to the period that unfolded next as the most magical 'midlife awakening.'

Starting my journey of self-discovery and empowerment would prove to be difficult. So, I started with 10 minutes of quiet ME TIME in my room. Lost and confused, I turned to the wisdom found in self-help books, blogs, and websites, determined to unlock the key to true happiness and fulfillment. I wanted to know how I got caught and, more importantly, how to break free. In these quiet moments amidst the chaos of life, I unearthed my soul goal: empower women. With this newfound clarity, I delved into non-violent communication, women's counseling, and self-love practices.

Fuelled by a passion to make a difference, I am now a certified women's circle facilitator, professional life coach, speaker and wellness workshop facilitator. My whole life has been preparing me for this experience. I believe in the power of women. I believe in you.

I am not lucky. You know what I am? I am smart, I am talented, I take advantage of the opportunities that come my way and work really, really hard. Don’t call me lucky.
CALL ME A BADASS.
